At the scene of the Sagas

Great many events told in the Icelandic Sagas, such as the one about the anti-hero, poet and sorcerer, Egill Skallagrímsson, took place in Borgarfjörður.

Location & surroundings

Borgarfjörður is an idyllic fjord in the Western Region of Iceland, near the town of Borgarnes, approx. a 60 minute drive from Reykjavík and a 90 minute drive from KEF international airport.

Although the waters in Borgarfjörður appear calm, the fjord has significant undercurrents and many dangerous shallows. The numerous flat islands in the fjord are uninhabited and most have been relatively untouched for centuries. The land around the fjord has however been inhabited and cultivated since the time of the early settlement in the late 9th century.

Borgarfjörður is thought to be named after the farm Borg, which according to the sagas was founded by Egill's father Skallagrímur, who took the land around the fjord.

Sauna and a show

Our large wooden deck features a grill station, hot tub, cold tub and a dry sauna cabin with a spectacular view overlooking the Langá River to the south, flowing into the Atlantic Ocean.

As evening falls, the Northern Lights will on most nights grace the sky with a breathtaking spectacle … absolutely free of charge.

So pray for a clear night sky.

We hope that during your stay you will find time to appreciate all the countless works of art, historical objects and artefacts we have carefully selected for the lodge.

Renovating Enska húsið and its grounds has been a monumental project, painstaking, nerve-racking and eye-wateringly costly. Yet above all, it has been a labour of love, overseen by our dear friend and gifted interior designer Hálfdán Pedersen, who worked tirelessly for months on end finding a delicate balance of preserving the heart and soul of the old fishing lodge, so loved and cherished by Mrs. Kennard, and meeting our own aspirations and vision for the future.
